Australia’s flagship program, Investing in Infrastructure (3i), has supported Rural Electricity Enterprises (REE) on 18 projects across Cambodia to expand the electricity network to accelerate the access to reliable electricity in rural areas. Through this initiative, over 140,000 rural Cambodians can enjoy the benefits of a reliable power supply, while new economic empowerment opportunities have been created in these areas. Ms. Reaksmey is one of the beneficiaries of the program. After working in Phnom Penh for over 20 years, and thanks to newly-available electricity in her hometown, Ms. Reaksmey decided to return to her hometown with her two-year old son to kick-start her tailoring business in Prey Veng province’s Preah Theat commune. Her business is going from strength to strength. “I can say that doing business in my hometown is better and I am happier than in the big city”, said Ms. Reaksmey.
